In 2010, Arakura received a grant to build a maintainable garden in the school grounds. This was very exciting as we looked to build some planters, and have each class grow certain crops over the year. It also resulted in the ability to recycle food scraps using composting, and has become a very valuable and hands on learning environment for the students.
In 2013, Arakura School chose to be beneficiaries of Fruit Trees in Schools, a Hutt City Council initiative. We used the garden to grow the first lot of trees to be planted in our school and this will hopefully bear some fruit during the year for students to enjoy.
